to the beach. at least right now dense fog. fog developing here and up in the north bay santa rosa and napa reporting visibilities under a mile. current numbers in the 50s to lower 60s. concord 60 and fairfield in the upper 50s. what is happening a layer of warm air up above our head. as a result it's a shallow marine layer compressing the fog especially locally dense coast side and right around the bay. that will be a factor in our forecast for this morning. by 3:00 at the coast patchy fog. 60-65 degrees. right around the bay this morning pretty much the same deal and then into the afternoon hours mostly sunny skies. winds do pick up. inland neighborhoods partly cloudy. temperatures warming back up to the 80s. warmest locations could be around 90 degrees. forecast highs later on today. san francisco 69 degrees.

santa rosa mid 80s. and the warmest locations in the mid to upper 80s. coming up we will take a look at your five-day forecast, your holiday weekend in view. sal is standing by shedding the tear for the last day of the last morning commute. >> i know. there has been no time when i haven't seen that bridge. right now at the toll plaza, it looks good trying to get on to the bridge. but by tomorrow, the bridge will be closed. we'll look at this picture and there won't be anyone there at this time of the morning. there are no major problems by the way get into the city. this is a look at interstate 880 in oakland and that traffic is moving along very nicely. let's talk about the commute here on the east bay drive. there are no problems. it looks good. and if you are driving from concord to walnut creek, that is a very nice drive. let's go back to the desk. thank you. it's a historic day for a bridge that first opened to bay area commuters in the 1930s.

the clock ticking toward tonight's shut down of the bay bridge. this is the final morning commute for the old eastern span. ktvu christien kafton is joining us live with more on this countdown. good morning, christian. >> reporter: good morning. let's give you a live look. sal was just talking about it. let's give you a look from the ground level. you can see the commute looking very good. we are a little less than 15 hours away from the bay bridge closure. and many drivers are taking their final morning commute across the bay bridge before that new eastern span opens. we are at the preparation phase at this point. as we have been reporting, the bridge shuts down at 8:00 tonight until tuesday morning. while the bridge itself shuts down at 8:00, the california highway patrol will begin shutting down feeder freeways to the bridge at 7:00 p.m.. so if your travels take you across the bridge this evening, you need to take that into account. if you try to roll up to the

bridge at 7:59 it will be very difficult to get here. drivers are beginning to say goodbye to a bridge that has carried drivers for 77 years. >> well, i guess it served its purpose. right? and now out with the old and in with the new. >> reporter: the next few days will be action packed on the bridge with demolition work, paving, and lane striping all set to take place in that tight five daytime span. cal trans is urging drivers to add as much as an hour to their travel plans to get across other bridges and deal with any potential backups and of course they are urging anyone needing to travel to use public transportation. a little bit later on we will be taking that drive into san francisco ourselves. going across the bay bridge. getting a sense of what that is like and talking with commuters about their impressions about their last morning drive across the old eastern span of the bay bridge. we'll bring you updates throughout the morning on how

that commute is going and tell you how people are feeling on the final day of the olden span. the original eastern span of the bay bridge. for now we are live in oakland christien kafton ktvu channel 2 news. >> a lot of people will be effected by that. you might not have thought about medical workers. they know the bridge is critical and the transportation link into the bay area. drivers often rely on the bridge to deliver medical supplies. many have been working on a plan b during the bridge closure. starting tomorrow morning, they do plan to use other bridges and work long days to get wheelchairs and oxygen tanks to people who need them. >> it's going to be tough. they will deal with a lot of traffic but we are pretty much prepared for it. >> the u.s. postal service is making adjustments to make timely deliveries of mail. that includes monitoring traffic and choosing the alternate bridge that is less crowded. the final plans are under

way for another big construction project directly tied to the new bay bridge. they've got to tear down the old one. demolition crews have a big job ahead of them. dismantling that 76-year-old bridge. environmental restrictions means they can't use dynamite. so the old bay bridge will have to be torn down piece by piece to avoid a collapse. and the dreaded s-curve that will be torn down first. the entire demolition project will take about two years. you can get all the details by going to our channel 2 website. we have a special section dedicated to the bay bridge project including the closure details, alternate routes, and animation of what driving the new span will look like. firefighters are making sure a grass fire that burn into a neighborhood does not flair up again this morning.

delta winds whipped up that fire. tara moriarty joins us from the fairfield neighborhood where two houses burned to the ground. tara. >> reporter: crews have been busy boarding up some of the houses here. both of the firefighters have left the scene. we still see one rig. notice behind me you notice people cutting up these boards. firefighters had been here through the night dousing hot spots. if we see that garage door there in the distance, you can see how it is singed. the wind fueled fire broke out shortly after 3:30 yesterday afternoon. it jumped a creek, skipped a cinder block wall and hit a wind framed. many homeowners were at work and rushed home to see what was left. >> as you are driving down 680 you can see all the smoke and everything. you can't get there fast enough. >> there is just a lot of smoke

damage. but i really felt bad for the family because they had been my neighbors for a long, long time. >> reporter: firefighters had the blaze under control by 6:00 last night. two homes were lost. four more sustained damage. no price tag on the damage but luckily no one was hurt. investigators are still trying to figure out exactly how this fire started. whether it was a cigarette or a spark from a car. they say they may simply never know. we will keep you updated on the investigation. live from fairfield i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. the rim fire continues to burn part of yosemite national park. flames are inching toward hetch hetchy reservoir but the bay area water supply is safe for right now. the problems that could come months and years later. the 60 day court ordered

cooling off period ends october 10th. bart and his unions plan to negotiate salary and benefits beginning september 17th. so far both sides are not budging. once that cooling off period ends, workers are free to go on strike, again. the federal government threw out a claim that antiisrael protests at uc berkeley created a hostile environment for jewish students. the u.s. department of education began an investigation in july of last year. two recent graduates claim the schools annual par tide week encouraged antimedicate speech. the department of education investigation concludes the protests are constitutionally protected speech. today a controversial soda ban is being proposed in san jose. at least one city councilman is planning to protest it. councilman ash wants to ban sugary drinks and even whole milk from all city owned buildings. later today he plans to ask the

happening now today is the 50th anniversary of the march on washington. president obama is scheduled to speak at noon today in the same spot on the steps of the lincoln memorial where martin luther king junior delivered his famous i have a dream speech. kyla campbell is there at the national mall this morning where people are starting to arrive for the big event. >> reporter: we are standing at the only public entrance. you can take a look at the crowd building behind us. we got here a couple hours ago. only 50-60 people here. now a few hundred people have

gathered at the security gate. it opens in 45 minutes. they will make their way as close as they can get to the lincoln memorial. you can see the lincoln memorial in the background. that is where president barack obama and jimmy carter will speak along with civil rights leaders from the 1960s. that is happening in a few hours. first happening right now hundreds if not thousands of people are gathering to do the march for jobs in justice. they will start their walk in 45 minutes going 1.6 miles through washington, d.c. with a couple rally stops at the department of labor and the department of justice. they will end up here on the national mall. they will try top get as close as they can to the lincoln memorial. we will be here live. we will be checking in with you for the latest developments. kyla campbell ktvu channel 2 news. missing from today's events though two former presidents who won't be there george h.w. and his son george w. bush. both men were invited but their families say they have health issues that are preventing them

from coming. the younger president bush is recooperating from heart surgery earlier this month. his 89-year-old father has been dealing with various health problems. time is 5:14. this morning in a wreck baghdad was hit by several deadly bombings. it included car bombs and suicide bombs. about 65 people were killed. many of the victims were out shopping or heading to work. they targeted parking lots and outdoor restaurants. former secretary of state hillary clinton top will be back here in the bay area in november. clinton was in san francisco earlier this month. she was receiving an award from the american bar association. coming up in november she will be at a fundraiser for the clinton foundation. no word yet on where that fundraiser will be but we're hearing tickets will start at $150. oakland city councilman larry reed is not planning to run against jean quan next

year. according to the chronicle, reed said his daughter talked him out of running because she is worried about his health. brian parker and san francisco state professor joe tuman announced thatly be running for mayor of oakland. more sex abuse charges have been filed. contra costa county prosecutors charged joseph martin with 16 additional counts of abusing former students. he now faces a total of 125 counts of sex abuse. the charges include 13 former students. martin taught fifth grade at wood side elementary. and worked in the school district since 1991. there are several new developments in the kidnapping of hannah anderson. the family of the suspect of james dimaggio are backing off the idea for hannah to submit

to dna tests. there were rumors that he was the biological father of hannah and her younger brother. she went on pierce morgan's show last night to say dimaggio was a good man giving his life to protect hannah. >> i remember very vividly telling my brother she is trouble. i said you need to watch out for that one. >> reporter: on august 10th an fbi agent shot and killed dimaggio in idaho after a nation-wide search for him and hannah. investigators have declined to discuss a motive for the kidnapping but call hannah a victim in every sense of the word. facebook released a report on how many government requests for information it received in the first half of this year. u.s. government agencies made 11,000-12,000 requests. facebook gave the information in 79% of those cases saying they were obligated by law to

plan for that. they want you to plan for tuesday at 5:00 a.m.. let's move along -- for the reopening i should say. livermore valley a little slow on 205 coming up through livermore. there are no major problems. but it does look pretty good once you make it into the main part of livermore and into castro valley. not a bad commute at all. driving through the castro valley area that is fine. no problems here driving from hayward heading south. let's go to mark. hi there, sal. i know we could be tracking fog over the next few hours. that will impact your visibility near the coast and right around the bay. we are on fog watch. clouds over the bay bridge itself and right along the san mateo bridge and up into the north bay reports of visibilities. half mile visibility at last check and three quarter of a mile visibility out toward the napa area. current temperatures are in the 50s to the lower 60s. concord right now 60 degrees. napa at 54. like i said the fog in that region and wind speeds that has

a dangerous pest that originated in asia and spreads a disease that kills citrus trees. >> we have a very large fresh market citrus industry here and our industry just can't abide this disease killing its citrus and trees. >> travelers are being asked not to bring any citrus from overseas. so far only one diseased tree has been found in california. that is last year. wild story. a driver in also blames his dog for making him crash his car in his creek. >> he's on my foot and the car is going like heck. >> vick says he was taking his dog to the dog park when gio jumped on the gas pedal. the car sped out of the parking lot and through a fence. at last minute he turned the steering wheel avoiding the dog park but they landed in the creek. >> i just thank the lord i'm

august 28th good morning, i'm dave clark. >> good morning, i'm pam cook. thank you for waking up with us. 5:30. mark tamayo is in for steve today. what is the weather like? >> at least the fog is embracing that bay bridge right now. the clouds doing their thing. north bay santa rosa and napa. watch out for a drop off in visibilities especially up in the north bay you can see a half mile visibility up in santa rosa. current numbers are in the upper 50s to lower 60s. half-moon bay reporting 57 degrees. concord 60 and san jose 62 degrees. what is happening we have a layer of warm air compressing that marine layer. as a result that fog that could be thick is compressed closer to the surface. as a result we have low visibilities near parts of the shoreline. away from that temperatures warming back up inland. this morning 7:00 upper 50s to the mid 60s. and then by 4:00 this afternoon we're going to warm it up

inland. the warmest locations on track to reach the upper 80s to right around 90 degrees. forecast range highs. warmest locations on track to 88 in fairfield. 89 in brentwood. more on your five-day forecast in a few minutes. sal has an update on the morning's commute. this is a final morning commute for the bay area's busiest bridge that first opened in 1936. the clock is ticking toward tonight's bay bridge shut down. the chp will begin running traffic breaks at 7:00 tonight ahead of the bridge shut down at 8:00. the shut down will continue throughout the long labor day weekend so crews can finish work on the new eastern span. new bridge is scheduled to open tuesday morning. it's possible it could open late on the day on the day on monday. stay with ktvu for team coverage all morning long. cal tran planners do want you to plan though for tuesday at 5:00 if it does open early that will be a bonus.

but plan for it opening tuesday at 5:00 a.m.. let's move along to a live picture of interstate 880 north and southbound the traffic is moving along very nicely. if you are driving in the san jose area, the road sensors not showing us much at all which is good. i see a rot of green there expect for slow traffic on highway 92. and across the bay interstate 880 north and southbound looking pretty good as you drive through. if you are taking bart or cal train and muni, there are no delays reported. 5:33 let's go back to the desk. firefighters are standing watch over a destructive gas fire that destroyed two homes and burned four others. it started yesterday afternoon on interstate 80 and jumped a sound wall and bumped right into a neighborhood on mary gold drive. that is where ktvu tara moriarty is this morning. tara. >> reporter: firefighters there is about one rig left on scene. most of them have left.

they were keeping an eye on the hot spots to make sure this fire didn't flair up again. behind me there is a truck here where they have been cutting boards and putting them up in the windows here. trying to make sure all of these homes are secure. you can see to the right there, there is a garage that has been singed. and down the street the fire did the most damage. the wind field fire broke out shortly after 3:30. it jumped a creek. skipped a cinder block wall and hit a wood framed roof. police went door to door. they evacuated 50 people. many homeowners were at work and rushed home to see what was left. >> it hit our house first. the backyard and then the side of the house. and then it started up in the trees. it leapfrogged. the next two houses were fine and the next two are the ones that were burnt to the ground.

>> firefighters had the blaze under control at 6:00 last night. again two homes completely lost. four more sustained damage. no price tag yet on that damage but luckily no one was hurt. investigators are still trying to figure out how the fire starred. live from fairfield i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. time is 5:34. now to continuing coverage of the rim fire. let's take a look at the latest damage numbers. it's burned more than 184,000 acres or 290 square miles. that is six times the size of san francisco. and the fire is only 20% contained. fire has destroyed 111 structures including 31 homes. and more than 4,000 firefighters are out there battling the flames. >> there have been a couple fire line jumps and we've seen these clouds mushroom out where the fire burns very hot. >> flames are getting closer now to the hetch hetchy

reservoir but so far san francisco's water supply we are told remains safe. the fire is effecting tourism at yosemite. starting at noon today rangers will close down the popular ty oh georgia road through labor day weekend just to accommodate the fire crews. the fire is prompting more air quality warnings. the smoky haze has triggered emergency warnings along parts of the eastern sierra. school kids are being kept inside for the second time in a week. hospitals also reporting more people than normal going to emergency rooms complaining about breathing problems. flames are as we told you are getting closer to the hetch hetchy reservoir. managers say the bay area water supply has not been disturbed. it's still safe and clean enough for you to drink. wildlife experts are telling the chronicle the impact could be felt down the road. the fire is scorching the soil.

which won't be able to absorb rain in the future. that makes that area extremely vulnerable to landslides. which means a build up of sediment in the water. and lowering the quality of the water. part of the chico state campus is closed after police investigate a tragedy. a student was killed after a large tree branch fell on her. it happened yesterday afternoon in the area around bute hall. the university has not released the name of the young woman killed and it's still not caused the tree branch to come crashing down. happening today a proposal to ban sugary drinks will be debated in san jose. janine de la vega joins us from city hall where the ban is already causing controversy. >> reporter: under this new proposal, even diet sodas with sugar substitutes would be banned from certain venues in the city.

one city councilman is calling this proposal ridiculous and he wants residents to oppose this to speak up. the pop which is authored. fruit and vegetable drink with sweeteners and 50% real fruit or vegetable use would be banned. along with whole milk. councilman pete calls it a waste of time. he says the city needs to focus on hiring more police officers fixing streets, and improving services. not a beverage ban. he sent out a plea to residents to e-mail the council and attend to today's ruling. we plan on getting in touch with the state leaders to talk about this proposal. something to note that certain city venues would be exempt

like the sat center because it does serve commercial purposes. janine de la vega ktvu channel 2 news. also new this morning oakland police are investigating a shooting that injured three people. it happened at 10:00 last night in laurel park. the victim showed up apt the hospital with gunshot wounds. we do not know their conditions at this point. one of the victims is a woman. so far no arrests have been made. also in oakland last night our ktvu news crew took this video of a damaged ac transit bus. the bus was sideswiped during a chase in downtown oakland that ended a short time later. a man has died after being shot by police in antioch after a car chase. it happened yesterday afternoon about 4:45 on hill crest avenue near wild flower drive. police say the chase ended when

a man crashed his car and then got out with a gun and started running. that is when police officers opened fire. no police officers were hurt but a child in a separate car was hit by either shrapnel or shattered glass. cal osha is investigating the death of a construction worker at martin luther king junior middle school in berkeley. it happened at 12:45 yesterday afternoon while students were attending an orientation. a 62-year-old worker from livermore was laying asphalt for a new track at the school when he was hit and killed by a big rig. so far his name has not been released. new this morning united nations on say to syria shows evidence suggests chemical substances were used in an attack last week killing hundreds of people. this comes as u.n. inspectors head out for a second day near the attack. this is new video of the u.n. inspectors leaving their hotel room this morning.

the obama administration has already said it has undenial evidence that chemical weapons were used. there are reports the u.s. could begin a three-day offensive hitting syria with missile strikes as soon as tomorrow. both iran and venezuela are speaking out against any outside military action in syria. iran's foreign minister warned of grave conditions if any strikes are launched against syria. venezuela's president says the u.s. allegations that the syrian government used chemical weapons smells the same as when u.s -- both iran and venezuela are close allies of the syrian government. a group calling itself the syrian electronic army claims it hacked the domain of twitter and the new york times. the times website was unavailable for several hours although the times did set up alternative websites for its users. the service was restored earlier this morning.

street at 2:15 sunday morning. the police were a block away and they got there within minutes. police say a woman in her 20s may have been grazed by a bullet but no one was seriously hurt. >> those areas are very crowded at 2:00 in the morning when people are milling about. so we are lucky no one was hit. >> several passengers were detained they were questioned but police say few of them cooperated and no one was arrested. there are many unsolved killings in what has been a very violent year in oakland. now grieving family members are demanding answers from oakland city leaders. several mothers, grandmothers, wives, and sisters of young men killed on the streets of oakland went into the mayor's office yesterday afternoon and left with grim faces. >> i have not been aware of any suspect in my son's case.

mayor quan could not be at a meeting at oakland city hall yesterday. in america's big cities. raising the idea of an alert about a nuclear leak. on august 19th a leak was detected at the power plant the very same plant damaged in that quake and sometime. on on international scale. tokyo electric power says 80,000 gallons of water escaped last week. some may have reached the ocean. restrictions on foreign ourlines landing at san francisco international airport are now lifted.

two weeks after the airlines crash at sfo the faa would not allow foreign airlines to land on parallel runways at the same time. the faa now says it started allowing the side by side landings again last week. that is when the airport's instrument landing system was turned on again. it had been shut down because of a construction project. it just wasn't available when the crash occurred. 5:47 is the time right now. let's check in with sal for a look at the commute. >> right now at the toll plaza the traffic is getting busier. trying to get into san francisco. in some of the left lanes. no problems in the middle or to the right. it occurred to me that some people today may be driving across the bridge just this one final time before that bridge is permanently shut down. and you might see more traffic getting into san francisco. you certainly will see more traffic getting out of san

francisco for today's event and then tomorrow and friday the bridge will be closed along with the weekend and on monday. let's move along to 237 westbound the traffic here is moderate. there are no major problems as you drive through. as a matter of fact, it has been a nice looking drive for you. if you are driving from san ramon to the livermore area or dublin and down to the sunol grade, it hasn't been a bad drive. pleasanton traffic on 680 looking pretty good. and over to the fremont area it is a nice drive. let's go to mark. hi there, sal, good morning to you. we are tracking fog that could impact your visibility. at least in the short term. also up in the north bay santa rosa and napa reporting drop off visibilities. santa rosa last check one-half mile. san francisco currently 57 degrees and san jose in the lower 60s. forecast headlines for today dense morning fog floating around the bay. warm inland. tomorrow basically the same deal. and the weekend we cool things

off. high pressure has been building back into the area. pushing the storm track up to the north. so no big changes for today. inland neighborhoods we are thinking lots of 80s. around the bay 70s. this high strengthens a little bit more for friday. this could be the warmest day of the week and then we trend downward for the weekend. here's the forecast models showing you the fog. partly cloudy skies for the beaches. winds pick up from 10-20 miles an hour. santa rosa 85 degrees this afternoon. richmond at 73. more neighborhoods right around the rim of the bay we are thinking 70s and head over the hills you will see more 80s out toward antioch and brentwood would go with 90. san jose 80 degrees. dense fog this morning especially out toward ocean beach. might not be able to see the waves for the next few hours.

san francisco forecast high 69 degrees. back to school forecast for today the mt. diablo unified school district starting out this morning 8:00. 63 degrees. by lunchtime more sunshine. it will be nice at 79. and then a forecast high 86 degrees by 3:00 this afternoon. here's a look ahead your five- day forecast no major changes for tomorrow. for friday a brief spike in the numbers. weekend saturday we begin to cool things off. cooling trend begins for sunday. and for labor day the coolest day continues. we are not talking about any major heat. walmart surprised many workers announced it would provide medical benefits. it will cover partners whether they are the same or opposite sex and if the couple is married or not. the only requirements are the partners must have been in an exclusive relationship and living together for 12 months ere plans to stthat way.

a new sign twitter is preparing for an initial public offering. the microblogging company has hired commerce chief. former ticket master executive nathan hubber is expected to find ways to boost company revenue that could help justify twitter $10 billion evaluation. twitter could go public any time. the head of samsung electronic division announced he is worried. that is despite nearly 20 of samsung's phones. he says he is worried samsung will get too full of ourselves for what we have achieved and get complacent. he says samsung needs to continue to innovate. the latest innovation could be unvailed next week when a galaxy smart phone is expected to premier. we know the bay bridge will be shut down tonight but how will they remove the old bay bridge? detailing the bridge break down plan and which part of the bridge will they get rid of

first? plus serving up a protest. what bay area fast food restaurant workers are planning tomorrow to turn up the heat on their bosses.

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. it's 5:55. it may be tough getting fast food in some bay area cities tomorrow. hundreds of restaurant workers plan to go on strike.

fast food workers across the country want their pay increase to $15 an hour. that about $30,000 a year for full time workers. they say their industry is no longer an entry level job for teenagers and more are supporting families. restaurants say increasing wages that much would increase cost and drive away customers. syrofoam containers are now banned in san jose. it takes effect in january for national chains operating in the city. smaller restaurants have until january of 2015 to switch to paper or other recyclable products. syrofoam containers are already banned. time is 5:56. national football league helping survivors of last may's deadly tornado in oklahoma. the nfl is donating more than 1,000 pieces of equipment to a youth football league including helmets and shoulder pads. a lot of the gear the kids were lost or damaged during the

tornadoes. youth league has more than 40 teams and 750 players between the ages of six and 11. bay area has competition in bringing the oliverrics back to the united states -- olympics back to the united states. a nonprofit group is launching a campaign to host the 2014 summer games in the washington, d.c. baltimore area. it's estimated it will cost up to $6 billion to coast the olympics in d.c.. supporters predict that cost will be a lot lower because the area already has prime sports facilities. other u.s. cities mentioned as possibly bidding for the games include san francisco, los angeles, and philadelphia. >> very interesting. coming up next. allegations of anti-semitism at uc berkeley. what a federal investigation found one year later after the complaint was filed. a historic day for a bridge that just opened. bay area commuters in the
